MINNEAPOLIS, May 19, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- ADC (NASDAQ: ADCT)(www.adc.com) today announced that its FlexWave(TM) Prism distributed antenna system (DAS) has been deployed to provide mobile network capacity for large crowds at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds in Melbourne, Australia. One of the world's largest stadiums, the Melbourne Cricket Grounds hosts the Australian Football League (AFL) and cricket matches for as many as 100,000 spectators.
When a large Australian mobile network operator wanted to enhance capacity by the end of September, 2009 (in time for the AFL Grand Final), it turned to WiComm, a Sydney-based specialist in wireless solutions. With just three weeks to get the system up and running, WiComm selected ADC's FlexWave Prism DAS, which was designed to provide strong, multi-sector mobile service throughout the stadium.
"We have deployed ADC's DAS for customers all across Australia, and we were confident that the Prism system would be relatively simple to install and would provide plenty of capacity for this application," said Stephen Page, managing director for WiComm. "As it turned out, we got excellent results and our customer has been very happy."
The Prism system deployed at the stadium includes five Prism remote units, which carry 14 sectors of dual-channel 2100 MHz service. The system is driven by three new base stations deployed at the stadium by the mobile operator. The Prism system comes in three different enclosure sizes supporting two, three or four sectors per unit, and this allowed WiComm to deploy precisely the right number of sectors for each portion of the stadium. In all, the system carries two frequencies with two channels each to maximize network capacity.
"FlexWave Prism is continuing to prove itself at some of the world's most important sports venues, and we are proud to be adding the Melbourne Cricket Ground to our customer portfolio," said Tony LeFebvre, director of product management for ADC. "Prism's high output power and multi-sector design enabled an economical distribution of capacity throughout the facility."
