Duke University Deploys ADC Solutions for Campus-Wide Wireless Coverage

MINNEAPOLIS, Jun 16, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- ADC (NASDAQ: ADCT) (www.adc.com) today announced that Duke University is deploying its FlexWave(TM) and InterReach Fusion(R) distributed antenna systems (DAS) to improve wireless coverage and capacity across its campus in Durham, North Carolina.

Although served by traditional cell towers around the property, the Duke campus has many buildings and outdoor areas that do not receive adequate coverage or capacity. The university is addressing this challenge with a hybrid solution that uses ADC's FlexWave outdoor DAS along with its InterReach Fusion in-building DAS to extend coverage to new areas, including the East and West campuses, the Law School addition, and the expansion of the Fuqua School of Business.

The hybrid approach enables coverage ubiquity inside and outside buildings without sacrificing the visual integrity of the campus. Using outdoor systems to provide in-building coverage enabled a faster deployment with minimal disruption to the university. Augmenting spots not reachable from outdoor methods with in-building DAS offers the most cost-effective and complete solution.

Duke University has previously installed ADC in-building systems for coverage in 25 of its 220+ buildings, including Duke University Hospital. Under the new plan, ADC has already deployed five FlexWave outdoor DAS radio heads to cover areas of Duke's East and West campuses supporting three major service providers, and is now evaluating the impact on those systems on outdoor and in-building coverage before adding additional FlexWave and Fusion systems.

"We have worked with ADC and its wireless systems successfully over the years, so understanding their technology and capabilities was important when we sought to further enhance coverage across broader areas of the campus," said Bob Johnson, senior director for Duke University. "This hybrid plan allows us to quickly cover large areas of the campus and then upgrade priority areas with additional outdoor and in-building systems."

ADC's outdoor and indoor DAS solutions are part of the company's portfolio of microcellular networking products. Products such as InterReach Fusion and the recently-announced FlexWave Prism deliver coverage, capacity, and backhaul connectivity to provide high-quality wireless voice and data service in areas of the radio network where macro solutions can't reach.

"The unique combination of ADC coverage solutions and the flexibility of our outdoor and in-building DAS systems enable us to address the most complex wireless coverage and capacity issues thoroughly and cost effectively," said John Spindler, vice president of product management for ADC. "Duke University's campus is like a small city, and this deployment shows how our solutions deliver precision coverage to supplement macro network cell towers in dense environments."
